Hamburger Hafen (Port of Hamburg) / Speicherstadt / Elbphilharmonie

The Port of Hamburg – also known as "HafenCity" – encompasses 100 square kilometers of tidal harbor and is known as the Gateway to Germany. It's also where you'll find many of the city's most-visited tourist attractions, and on summer evenings and weekends, it's full of local residents relaxing. There are numerous offers of sightseeing and harbor tours: from huge excursion ships to small fishing barges. The latter is definitely the more fun option!
The old redbrick warehouses of the Speicherstadt, built in the second half of the 19th century on timber-pile foundations, are a Hamburg landmark. In 2015, they were appointed the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Hamburg. The warehouses are partially still in use, others now house museums such as the Speicherstadtmuseum and Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model railway in the world.

At the entrance from the harbor to the Speicherstadt is the newest attraction of the Hanseatic city: the Elbphilharmonie. The construction of the new concert hall started in 2007 and the opening has been postponed again and again. The design by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron is a massive glass construction set on top of the historic Kaispeicher A warehouse which, in addition to the concert hall, also includes a hotel and apartments.
