There is no need really to leave the city for open green space. But Munich is also ideally situated for day trips to the mountains, lakes and small picturesque towns. Whether you prefer sports, leisure or relaxation, most places are easily reached within 1-2 hours – also by train.
Englischer Garten (English Garden)
It is one of the world’s largest public parks and stretches from Hofgarten at Odeonsplatz all the way up to Freimann. People spend the whole day there, walking, cycling, playing ball games, having a picnic, surfing on Eisbach (behind Haus der Kunst), enjoying one of the beer gardens or simply lying in the grass.
Nymphenburger Schloss & Schlosspark (Nymphenburg Palace & Park)
The canal in front of the palace is used for ice skating when it freezes in the winter. Behind the palace, the beautiful park with woodland starts. It is scattered with attractions such as the small palaces and lodges, hidden sculptures, picturesque streams and lakes. If you walk all the way through, you can extend your walk all the way to Blutenburg, a small castle with a small Gothic church. The restaurant serves very good food and cake.

Viktualienmarkt
The Viktualienmarkt in the heart of the city is the hot spot for connoisseurs, gourmets and for visitors who find everything their heart desires here. In an area covering 22,000 m2 (240,000 sq ft), 140 stalls and shops offer flowers, exotic fruit, game, poultry, spices, cheese, fish, juices and so on. Most stalls and shops are open during the official opening hours (Monday to Saturday 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.); but the Biergarten doesn't open until 9 a.m. Many stalls close at 6 p.m., before the standard closing time. There are special opening hours for flower shops, bakeries and restaurants.
Kochelsee / Walchensee
Walchensee is around 200m higher than the neighboring lake Kochelsee. This difference in height has been used to generate energy since 1924. There are many hiking paths in the mountains around these two picturesque lakes from which you have a wonderful view. The Franz-Marc-Museum in Kochel shows works of art by Franz Marc and other members of the German expressionist groups “Blauer Reiter” and “Brücke”. The large windows of the new annex give magnificent views of the surrounding landscape.

The public transport system in Munich is very well-developed and is mostly very reliable. It includes U-Bahn (underground), S-Bahn (suburban trains) and many trams and buses. The websites www.mvv-muenchen.de and www.mvg.de offer all information you might need, also in English. If you have a ticket that needs validating (e.g. single ticket, day ticket, strip ticket), please remember to stamp it in one of the machines before travelling.
