Departure
We hope you enjoyed your time in Germany.
To ensure a smooth departure, we kindly ask you to read the following ‘instructions’ carefully.
General
- Please remove all boxes and personal items before returning the keys. Anything left will be disposed of at
your cost - Check all light bulbs where these were provided when you moved in
- Ensure all keys for interior doors are left in the doors and that you return the number of keys and remote
controls as noted on your entry handover report - Put any fixtures and fittings that you removed (furniture, lamps, curtain rails etc.) back in place
- Remove all nails, screws and hooks from the walls and doors and check whether any holes need closing
up. Any traces of adhesive from stickers must also be removed. - Ensure the washing machine is clean (esp. the drawer for the detergent) and all fluff is removed from the
filter in the tumble drier
Kitchen
- Please empty ALL cupboards and drawers and clean the insides
- Empty and defrost fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before your final departure, wipe out any moisture
and leave the doors open - Make sure not to pack any instruction manuals for the appliances
- Remove all traces of limescale from taps and appliances
- Clean all silicone joints and check if they may need replacing
- Clean/replace the filters in the dishwasher and extractor fan
- Clean the oven thoroughly and do not leave food of any kind
Bathroom
- Please empty and clean all cupboards and clean the insides
- Remove all traces of limescale from taps, shower head, shower doors, etc.
- Clean all silicone joints and check if they may need replacing
- Ensure the drain in the shower, bathtub and washbasin are free of hairs and unblocked
Attic/Cellar/Garage
- Please remove all boxes, rubbish, cobwebs etc. All rooms must be empty and clean
- Check if the oil tank need refilling
Garden
- Please ensure that you leave the garden in the same state as it was when you moved in (hedges, shrubs
and grass trimmed, leaves, moss and algae removed from surfaces) - Do not leave any window boxes, tubs or pots unless agreed so with the landlord
Trash
- Please remove all trash from the house/apartment before handing over the keys
- Take care not to overfill the bins, as this may result in them not be emptied in the collection
- Ensure that large bulky items are correctly disposed of. Your consultant will be able to give advice
Additional requirements for furnished properties:
- Please ensure all the furniture is clean
- Ensure the curtains, bed linen, tea towels, cushion covers etc. are either dry cleaned or washed and ironed
- Ensure all utensils, crockery and cutlery that were provided are clean and in the cupboards
- Make a note of any breakage and ask the landlord if he or she will replace the item or whether they would
like you to
De-registration at the local authorities
Kindly note that you are required by law to de-register at the local town hall/Bürgerbüro within 2 weeks upon your departure date if moving abroad.
When:
- The earliest de-registration date is 7 days prior to your actual departure date
- The latest 14 days upon your last day in Germany
How:
- Can be submitted in person, online or via post.
Since the de-registration confirmation is needed right away for almost all contract cancellations, please align
with your Relocation Specialist at BLUE for the best approach!

- Copy of your passport
- Completed and signed de-registration form
Mail Forwarding Deutsche Post - How To
We highly recommend to set-up mail forwarding prior to your departure from Germany to make sure any important letters will be forwarded to your new home address. For any questions on the below please contact your Relocation Specialist at BLUE.
- 1. Go to https://shop.deutschepost.de/nachsendeservice-beauftragen Make sure that you visit the actual website of Deutsche Post – other providers may charge much more money!
- 2. Scroll down and choose private mail forwarding:
- 3. Scroll down and select “Umzug” as reason for your mail forwarding. Choose the start date
as well as the duration (12 or 24 months):
- 4. Scroll down and fill in all the required fields marked with an asterisk:
- 5. Should any other person in your household expect mail/post (e.g. your spouse, children),
please also add them to make sure their post is also forwarded. You can add more people
by clicking on “Weitere Personen hinzufügen”:
- 6. Scroll down and enter your current address (“Bisherige Adresse”) as well as your new mail forwarding address (“Neue Adresse”). Do not click on “Postfachadresse angeben”. Choose your country and use the “Adresszusatz” to enter a c/o if your name won’t be on the mailbox.
- 7. We recommend that you chose “Mit Umzugsmitteilung”. It’s free of charge and that way people who send mail to your old address will be notified of your new mailing address:
- 8. We don’t usually choose any additional services, as they can only be provided within Germany. Proceed by clicking on “In den Warenkorb” (add to your shopping cart):
- 9. Your shopping cart will be displayed. You can click on “Details” to crosscheck your data. You will also have to agree to the terms and conditions (AGB).
- 10. Once you have checked everything, scroll down and click on “Nächster Schritt” to proceed. You will be asked to enter a billing address (“Rechnungsadresse”) which should already be filled in with the details of your current address. If you want a newsletter from Deutsche Post, you can activate it here:
- Scroll down and choose your payment method. By clicking on “Weitere Zahlungsmethoden”, all available options will be displayed. Deutsche Post currently offers the following payment methods:
- PayPal
- Online bank transfer
- Portokasse
- Credit Card
Choose your payment method and select “Nächster Schritt” to proceed.
- 11. An overview of your order will be displayed, and you can check all your data one more time. Mail forwarding will be purchased once you click on “Jetzt kaufen”. Depending on your chosen payment method, you could be redirected to another page to complete the payment.
- 12. Once the mail forwarding was successfully purchased, your “Bestellnummer” (order number) will be displayed, and you will receive an E-Mail with an invoice. Your order number is very important if you ever have to contact Deutsche Post regarding your mail
