Insurance in Germany

The following insurances are not mandatory, but highly recommended:

PERSONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE (Private Haftpflichtversicherung):

This insurance covers all damage that may be caused to a third person by a family member, i.e. the pipe of a dishwasher leaking into the downstairs neighbor’s apartment, a child’s ball breaking the landlord’s window or you spilling coffee over someone else’s shirt. A personal liability insurance is considered very important in Germany and almost every person/couple/family has it. Often it is requested in a rental contract. It is quite inexpensive as there are not too many insurance cases reported. Most insurance companies offer special tariffs for families and couples.

DOG LIABILTY INSURANCE (Tierhaftpflichtversicherung):

If a family has a dog, it is highly recommendable to get a pet liability insurance (Note: in several German federal states this insurance is obligatory for all dogs, others have a different regulation, depending on height, breed lists, etc.). For cats there is no special insurance tariff.

HOUSEHOLD CONTENTS INSURANCE (Hausratversicherung):

This insurance covers the contents of your household such as furniture, clothes and valuables up to a certain percentage of the insured amount. Depending on the contract, your household goods are covered against fire, theft, robbery, water damage, possibly vandalism. Theft of your bicycle can also be included. Please note that all damages (related to household content insurance as well as personal liability insurance)
have to be reported immediately and not just a week before departure or leaving of the country.

Additional insurances:

LEGAL EXPENSES INSURANCE (Rechtsschutzversicherung):

This insurance covers costs of legal action brought against you by another party, generally at least EUR 150,000. You can have the entire family covered (Familienrechtsschutz), problems with your employer (Arbeitsrechtsschutz), for problems you may have as a motorist or cyclist (Verkehrsrechtsschutz) and/or for problems with your landlord (Mietrechtsschutz). There are also combinations of private, job and traffic legal
insurance.

CAR INSURANCE (KFZ-Versicherung)

In order to register a car in Germany, you require a so-called double card from your car insurance company. A third-party liability insurance is compulsory. You must provide proof of your previous insurance record in order to get the benefit from accident-free driving. However, not all insurance companies will accept the proof from an overseas insurance company. If you have any questions or are interested in any of the above-mentioned insurances, please reach out to your Relocation Specialist at BLUE. If we do not hear back from you, then we assume you are not interested or you are taking care of any desired insurances yourself.
