Maultaschen

One of the best-known Swabian specialties which are rolled or folded pasta bags with fillings (meat, spinach or onions). Maultaschen are now popular around the world, even in Russia and the United States. There are many ways of preparing them, either in a broth or fused with roasted onions on fried in slices.


Spätzle & Knöpfle

Spätzle and Knöpfle are a universal side dish to meat dishes with sauces for the Swabians. One of the most popular dish is Käsespätzle which is Spätzle cooked in salted water and then layered into a casserole with different kinds of grated cheese and roasted onions and then baked.


Prezel

Different bread varieties is characteristic for the Swabian baking culture. But some bakeries are popular all over the region and are available in every bakery, like Pretzels.


The swabian Dialect

Swabian is spoken in Swabia which covers much of the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is difficult to understand for speaker of Standard German or those not used to it. Some characteristics are that the ending “-at” is used for verbs in the first person plural or the pronounciation of “s” before a “t” or “p” as “sch”.

A small memorial at the site of the house where Albert Einstein was born. The whole district and the house were destroyed in the firebombing of 1944.
